chitty mexican food

to live in the woodlands, texas puts one in the unique position of being surrounded by a wealth of mexican restaurants. if you want to check this out for yourself, here’s a wonderful listing of them. as an independently not-wealthy woman, i like to eat out a lot. that, and i used to have to cook all the time. every night. and most weekend breakfasts. and pack lunches… it got old. anyway… the boyfriend and i have been planning on getting out to mariachi’s in indian springs for a while now, but wanted to wait till they’d worked out the kinks of being new.

so we went tonight. and i’m sad to report that the kinks, alas, have not been worked out. in fact, they are apparently so kinked up, they plan on revamping the entire menu tomorrow. a practice which i do not endorse, but perhaps in their case it will truly help. god knows they need all the help they can get.

the salsa had the distinct flavor of a well-made, simmered all day marinara sauce. seriously, i wanted to trade my store-bought tortilla chips for some fresh bread sticks. boyfriend ordered chicken fajitas (natch) and i ordered the cheese enchilada plate. while my dinner was so-so, i wouldn’t have paid eight bucks for it. that’s gotta be about a 300% mark up on the food. the fajitas were bland. so bland in fact, we were tempted to put some salsa on the chicken to zest it up, but then we would have needed some pasta and some parmesan to complete the meal. and the tortillas… ugh. granted, he prefers corn tortillas to flour, but even the crappiest low cost mexican joint around makes their own tortillas in house – flour or corn. not mariachi’s though. oh, no, they’re apparently too “elegant” for a tortilla maker, so we got leather-tough store-bought corn tortillas.

but like i said, according to our server (a kid who is experienced in waiting tables, i’ve seen him around town) that couldn’t be bothered to check in with us more than a couple of times, they plan on making some massive changes to the menu starting tomorrow. so maybe — maybe we’ll give them another chance. after all, the manager asked us to.
