just in case you haven’t noticed, this week has been the 40th anniversary of the apollo 11 mission and first lunar landing. if you live around here (which i assume 99% of my readers do) then this a time of extreme pride for us. but on the other hand…
if you watch tv (which i assume 100% of my readers do) then you can’t possibly have escaped the ad currently playing in heavy rotation on every network every hour of every day for the omega speedmaster watch. but on the off chance you live, oh, i don’t know, on the moon, here’s a link to it.
now, funny thing about this ad; they decided to use only a very small (albeit significant) portion of president kennedy’s speech. the problem with that being that they cut the speech off in such a way, it leaves one to wonder, what “other things” are we supposed to have chosen to do, anyway – not because they were easy, but because they were hard?
well, wonder no more, friends. i give you, a summation of the “other things”
we intend to be first…
in science and in industry,
peace and security,
obligations to ourselves as well as others,
to become the world’s leading space-faring nation.
new knowledge to be gained,
new rights to be won,
climb the highest mountain
fly the atlantic
go to the moon.
not because they are easy,
but because they are hard
we are unwilling to postpone
we intend to win.
