shortcomings and pitfalls

Category: I $hit U Not, Rants, Tunes & Scenes | Comments Off

so we got uverse. and now, for your regularly unscheduled public service announcement:

it’s not exactly what it’s cracked up to be – but it’s not as bad as you might have heard, either. on the plus side, the picture is awesome. like you have no idea how great it is. it’s that amazing. especially on the boyfriend’s wall-o-tv, but just fine on my normal-o-vision in the bedroom, too. and the sound is crisp and clear as well. on the internet side, the download speed is consistantly breakneck awesome. uploads, too.

but there are some negatives; first of all, if you’re used to comcast, like i was, or dish, like we had before uverse, you’ll hate this part: you can’t record, pause or rewind live tv on any other reciever, just the main one. you also can only have hd on one tv, no matter how many recievers you have. we have two tv’s, two recievers and the absolute largest possible package of hd channels; doesn’t matter, we can only watch hd on one tv at a time – and that includes recording (so if i’m recording an hd show in the bedroom we can’t watch a different hd show out in the living room. and speaking of recording – you also don’t get a lot of say as to when it records a show that repeats. so for example, i watch real time with bill maher, which comes on at 9:00 om and repeats at 10:00 pm on friday nights. but it also repeats again another three or four times throughout the weekend. well, i prefer that it record at midnight on saturday, just to not interrupt anything else i might want to see. so that’s when i tried to tell uverse to record it. but then if i don’t have anything else set to record and i’m just watching tv, it will interrupt me to start recording.

that’s annoying.

the last negative – that thankfully i haven’t experienced yet, but i’m sure i’m destined to the next time i’m watching grey’s anatomy, because that’s murphy’s law – is that apparently it will just freeze up. it’s like a show will pause… only it’s not paused, it’s frozen.  you can rewind it, and eventually, you can skip past the point at which it froze, and then it’s fine. of course, this has only been experienced again, on the main tv. i have yet to have this happen in the bedroom (my place of choice for grey’s time) so we’ll see.

meanwhile, we’re trying to finish watching or recording the 80-odd hours of stuff that’s on our dish dvr before we have to return it, so if i go all radio-silent for a couple of days, you’ll know i’m numb and motionless in front of the boob toob. ;o)
