and away we go!

Category: Not All Bad, Tunes & Scenes | Comments Off

so i thought about writing about tax day; cause that’s today, and it’s on a lot of people’s minds. but not mine. i mean, i’ll be honest; i put off filing till just a few weeks ago. but i did get it done. in like an hour. online. for free. and got a refund in like eight business days. so i’m pretty alright with that. nothing to biotch about.

so instead, i’ll give you all a bit of a pre-review review; because by special invitation, the boyfriend and i got to go watch away we go tonight and give our opinion. but not have camera phones!!!! absolutely no no no camera phones!!!!! they were totally nuts about the camera phones! apparently, if you wanted, however, you could have brought a camcorder; that wasn’t on the invite. ha.

anyway, it was a very cute film; i’ll spoil a point for you; in the trailer above, where they’re talking about being screw ups, in the film they actually drop the f-bomb where appropriate; which, frankly, makes the scene funnier i think. the story is that verona (Maya Rudolph) and burt (John Krasinski) are thirty-three-four-ish and find themselves somewhat unexpectedly expecting and need to finally decide where to put down roots. they figure out some basic stuff, that they want to be in a good child-friendly environment, have the stability of family and/or friends around, etc. but since, thanks to burt’s flighty parents, they find themselves rather adrift, they go on a journey to decide where, exactly, home will be.

without giving away too much of the story (because really, i think you should see it, it was good) i will tell you that despite the fact that the film is based on their journey, you do figure out quite easily about a quarter of the way into the film where they will end up. it’s sort of a given. what isn’t a given is where, exactly, home is located. the boyfriend figured it out. i didn’t. call me sheltered, or maybe it’s just my west coast roots. but he knew and i didn’t. anyway, there are some hilarious scenes, and some gross-out non-funny scenes. these i’ll share with you; in hopes that they’ll play up the hilarious one more, and possibly re-work the grossest.

the bad first (chronilogically, it happens that way anyway) the film opens with a gratuitous sex scene; not that you can see what is happening, but because the discussion that begins is regarding how a woman can taste different when she’s either menopausal or pregnant it’s clear what exactly is going on. and i guess that’s what made it so gross to me; i mean, i’m all for the… ehm… fun stuff beneath the sheets; but please, let’s not talk about what we taste like, eh? i mean, for the ick factor, we could have just as easily conveyed the same scene with the basic lovemaking and he can comment on how she feels or something.

the first stop on their journey is phoenix, and they visit with verona’s ex-boss, played by allison janey. i loved, loved, loved allison in juno, and she’s every bit as side-splittingly funny in this film. she at one point is lamenting her beautiful breasts and how, after having two children that sucked the life out of her she has so little left that verona should be grateful for what she has; for she, too, will end up with boobs that look like an old man’s nut-sack, complete with hair! i died, died laughing. you don’t even know!!

so there, i gave a bit away, but not much, not really. go see it. you’ll be glad you did. ’nuff said.

and away we go!
