my birthday this year was fantastic. not only did i get to do exactly what i wanted, but no one gave me a hard time about what i wanted being so – well… low key.
years ago, i made the mistake of telling someone that no one ever really made a big deal about my birthday. in what can only be described as grandiose form, they consistently made a f%*#ing huge deal out of my birthday from that point forward. that was just how clueless they were. i didn’t tell the story to get sympathy and expensive gifts and waiters singing to me in fancy restaurants. i told the story to make them aware that since it was what i was accustomed to, i was more than content to leave it that way. believe it or not, i really prefer to not be the center of attention.
this year, however, was a complete one-eighty. this year i had dinner with the boyfriend a great friend, talking for hours about workstuff (such a relief to get some of that off my chest with someone that’s been there!) and lifestuff and how this year was going to be so great. i got to sleep in as late as i wanted, no one woke me with breakfast in bed or plans to drive three hours out of town. we walked in the sunshine around the mall common area in weather that could have been ordered up specifically for the occasion; sunshine, a light breeze, eighty degrees. partially cloudy but not dreary. not muggy, not clammy. perfect. we went to the movies and saw a drama (valkrie) and a romantic comedy (four christmases). we ate at cheesecake factory and i actually had cheesecake – sans singing waiters. the most decadant, almost, but not quite too rich KAHLUA COCOA COFFEE CHEESECAKE.
and for a gift, my very first orchid. i’ve never owned one before, and i’ve always wanted to. but i had menacing cats or other people in the house that wanted to keep the house to bloody cold for an orchid or too much responsibility of a higher priority than a plant to keep alive. but i have always wanted an orchid, and now i have one. and it’s beautiful white. a phalaenopsis. similar to this one:
and finally, to wrap this all up with a bow of perfection, a baker’s dozen of fresh baked cranberry bagels and blueberry cream cheese shmear from einstein brothers.
