fact: i’m a renter.
fact: my brother is a landlord.
i do not rent from my brother, however. and thank god. sadly tho – mom does.
i have to admit that by and large i’ve enjoyed the time i’ve lived in my apartment. it’s in a nice area; it’s older but doesn’t have that “you’re the 100th person to live here” feeling. i’ve had surprisingly few cockroaches for adjacent housing, always a plus.
but here’s the thing: when i first moved into my place last year, there was a leak in the roof, just over the edge of my bed. they came and fixed it. and then it rained and there it was again, the leak in the roof…and then they fixed it. and then it rained again and there it was a third time and — then they really fixed it. only took them three tries. but they were finally sucessful around april or so. now that the hurricane is over, they’ve sent a hardhat wearing crew around to check for storm damage. these guys spotted the resulting crack in the ceiling from the past leak issue and have decided that, hey, maybe they should actually fix the inside of the apartment and not just the outside. and so i said to them, i said, ‘ehm…… it’s september now. my lease is nearly up. why don’t you just take a flying leap, eh?’ it’s waited this long, it’ll wait some more. as for the roaches, well, i’ve now seen seven i belive in just over nine months; three of which were just this past week, so i’ve not complained.
mom on the other hand is renting from my landlord brother. she has a roof that leaked the first time it rained, hardwood floors that have been painted $hit-brown, an avacado-green range that she had to personally remove the back glass from in order to take a razor blade and scrape out the piles of built-up cockroach $hit that had built up around the clock and cabinets that she was literally afraid to touch the knobs on for fear of getting god-knows-what on her hands. oh, and did i mention she’s had more cockroaches per day than I’ve had in the entire time i’ve lived at my place?
