juno, the cautionary whale

Category: Tunes & Scenes | Comments Off

when juno first came out, i figured i’d never see it. what good can possibly come from a thirty-something woman that can’t have kids watching the tale of a sixteen-year-old girl get unexpectedly pregnant on her virgin journey into adulthood? nevertheless, i put it in my queue.

and now it retrospect i am so glad i did. it was a truly unexpected gem of a film with some of the most hilarious dialog i’ve heard in a long time and a storyline that really didn’t go anywhere near where i thought it would, in fact, it went right where it should.

for those of you that haven’t seen it, however, here are some fantastic lines:

I’m just gonna go ahead an nip this thing in the bud. Cuz you know, they say pregnancy often leads to, you know…
[brief pause]
…infants.

Juno MacGuff: Ow, ow, fuckity-ow! Bren, when do I get that spinal tap thing?
Bren: It’s called a spinal block. And you can’t have it yet, honey. The doctor said you’re not dilated enough.
Juno MacGuff: You mean I have to wait for it to get worse? Why can’t they just give it to me now?
Bren: Well, honey, doctors are sadists who like to play God and watch lesser people scream…
[Juno lets out painful scream, Brenda checks her watch]
Bren: Shit.
[to doctor]
Bren: Hey, can we get my kid the damn spinal tap already?

and of course the soundtrack was pretty awesome too. i especially loved “anyone else but you” performed acoustically by michael cera and ellen page.
